Question: the gelding used to have a fantastic, wonderful smooth gait....
he has gotten "pacey" the last few times I've ridden him. I started
him out in a wonder bit; could that be it???
the bit I'm using now just has a 4" shank with a broken bit.

There are several things that could contribute to your horse becoming pacey -
it could be the bit, the amount of collection he is ridden with, the type of
shoes he is wearing, the angles of his feet, the length of his feet, and/or
the terrain. You might want to start the process of elimination with putting
him back in the wonder bit first, then check his feet.
